DEATH
Maria Spernbauer, Austria:
I think there are similarities between birth and death, how
it is in the culture because the Massai mother you wouldn't
hear a word when she was in labor and you wouldn't hear her
cry or shout when somebody dies. And Wasonjos, they would
cry from the very first time, they would stay with their people
until they're dead and then they would put them in the embryo
position so that as soon as they get “totenstarre”,
they can be buried in a sitting position. And that's again
a part of their culture/ religion that they still believe
that ... their god is coming and wakes them up to stand up
for resurrection and they have to sit, otherwise they're too
late to stand up.
